Rodrigo Manrique, Maestre de Santiago, muere en noviembre de 1487. A su muerte, su hijo, Jorge Manrique, concibió sus Coplas a la muerte de su padre, una elegía poética donde se combinan tradición y originalidad, elementos medievales junto con otros que anuncian el incipiente Renacimiento. No son sino una reflexión sobre la vida, la fama, la fortuna y la muerte, bajo el prisma de la resignación cristiana; pero acaban por ser también un canto a la vida en medio de la tradición cuatrocentista de la muerte. Inspiradas en los precedentes clásicos medievales del género y en el Eclesiastés, también contienen alusiones a la historia reciente de Castilla e incluso a sucesos en los que pude estar presente el propiom autor. Por todo ello, se constituye en una de las obras capitales de la literatura española y, sin duda, en el mejor poema elegíaco de la poesía medieval.
